Well, I know a bit of the story behind the earrings.

Tori says, "The silver earrings are from a jewelery maker by the name of Jacqueline Rabin. She is an African-American living in London, and she is very talked about. You can find her work in a place off Carnaby street called Jess James. Great jewelry store. all the pieces are in aquariums. without the water." (That was from a Q&A session in the fall of 1996.)

She also said (somewhere, though for the life of me I can't find where -- but I'm pretty sure it was in a spoken interview) that she takes them back to Jacqueline from time to time for touch-ups and repairs and has taken to wearing ONLY those earrings simply because they make her feel good. There was just something about them that felt magical and special and strengthening, and she feels wonderful having them on.

[I'm paraphrasing here.]

A note about the repairs: if you look at the earrings closely now, you can see signs of them having been pounded back into shape a little too often. They keep spreading out and getting slightly larger each time, and they have more and more dents from the flattening tools.
