Lyrics

Flicker
yes, flicker
There it is
a little less faint
a little more of your flame
feel it warm your skin
part of you trapped within

Shed a little light on this
help me see
Shed a little light on this
underneath the scarring
from his defiling
underneath the pain

Heroines
they are not born
they are made
a phoenix forms
her ashes rise
expose their Hell
break Satan's spell
Fire purifies
it's redemption time

Flicker
yes, flicker
when neighbors and friends
only give you
their burning silence
even with torches raised
part of you can't feel safe

Shed a little light on this
help me see
Shed a little light on this, please
Shed a little light on this
and on those who excuse
this act of violence
choosing you to blame

Heroines
they are not born
they are made
a phoenix forms
her ashes rise
expose their Hell
break Satan's spell
Fire purifies
it's redemption time

Shed a little light on this
Shed a little light on this

Tori Quotes

"After viewing the film, I spoke with Bonni and Jon about the devastating complexities of the stories they capture in Audrie & Daisy. The song was informed by these conversations. I wrote 'Flicker' to hold a sonic space for the heroines of this powerful and timely documentary." [Broadway World - August 29, 2016]

"'Flicker' was created after seeing the film Audrie & Daisy. This was something that left me in shock and sadness. . . . It brought up anger in me. It brought up grief. . . . The phoenix out of the ashes was an image that I really saw when I looked at Daisy. I began to understand the four-year journey she had to take in order to get to the place she is now, the place of empowerment. So that was really very much part of the birth of the song. . . . What it brings up for me as a mom is that it is a very tough conversation that you have with your daughter, your son. I think this film is going to wake a lot of adults up." [Netflix Featurette - September 9, 2016]

"I'm not sure there is more sexual violence against young women now, but the additional shame and bullying teenagers suffer through social media is still shocking. There is a lot of conversation about pressures young girls face in the way they look these days -- what does that have to do with being stripped naked and degraded and assaulted by boys you've known your whole life? Why isn't there more emphasis on the conversation we need to have with young men?" [The Guardian - September 19, 2016]

"The song 'Flicker,' at its heart, is about 'phoenix out of the ashes' and about fire and how all of us sometimes cannot find that spark. There are times when the light flickers out and we need that ignition to happen in order for us to step into survivor and out of victimhood. And the song holds a space for, I'd like to think, acknowledging what the film brought out in me, acknowledging the journey and the powerful story that the filmmakers are telling." [Billboard Q&A - September 20, 2016]
