Addition of Light Divided

Lyrics by Tori Amos

She said, "I am hurt"
Love is lost and frozen
Pray that I don't stay
Feeling broken
Feeling broken

I woke up in an aqua
Tourmaline dream
I woke up in an aqua
Tourmaline dream

Let the light break through
You don't need to stay broken
Break this chain of pain
You don't want to stay broken
You don't want to stay broken

Just wake up in an aqua
Tourmaline dream
Just wake up in an aqua
Tourmaline dream

Rum punch in my hand
We melt with Kali's dance
Hearing voices
We could join forces

And we did and we did
Yes, we did and we did
And we did
And we did and we did
And we did and we did
Yes, we did
And we did join forces

Addition of light divided
Addition of light divided
Addition of light divided
Divided
Divided

That chain broken
That chain broken
That chain broken

Tori Quotes

I wrote this song after visiting a cave in Nanjizal Beach (which you can find on the album artwork). There is a huge rock cut in two with shards of light shining through. To get to the other side, you have to dive into the water up to your chin. At that time, I had only written half of the lyrics of the song. Sometimes you need to immerse yourself in something else for a transformation to happen. When I immersed myself in that water, it was like a baptism and something really changed. The water is soothing, yes, but it also brings incredible healing. That's when I heard the words, "We don't have to stay broken." Before I could find this new ME, I had to agree to let go of the old one. My old way of handling things was probably related to me travelling but the pandemic took it away from me. I had to say goodbye to it and find another way to deal with things, by standing still. [Rolling Stone - November 11, 2021]

I was really bonding with my niece in New York City, who is very close to my daughter. She was dealing with the lockdown too. We see each other for the holidays and were seeing each other less because of the restrictions. I began to realize that twentysomethings were at a time in their life when they are going on adventures and having these experiences, but the restrictions stopped them from doing it. This song was acknowledging what she was going through and her experience of the lockdown and how some of the relationships did not survive it. My husband and I work together all the time. For good or ill, we know each pretty well. [Scene - May 5, 2022]
