Tori Amos interview and live performance

"Crucify" / interview / "Winter"

transcript

Leno: It's good to see ya. I enjoyed you very much. When I first heard you, I thought you were in English, I thought--

Tori: Well, I've lived there over two years now.

Leno: Yeah, yeah.

Tori: They can't understand me when I order food unless I speak correctly.

Leno: Oh, I see.

Tori: So, you know, I gotta eat, I love to eat.

Leno: Oh, there you go, there you go. Now, you don't like to really sit still, you kind of move around a lot when you play which, uh, works for me.

Tori: It works for me, too. Um, you know, I'm, uh, I'm a minister's daughter.

Leno: Oh, is that right?

Tori: And um, hi dad. (Waves) And um, my father, um it was a it was a real Christian home I was brought up in so um it's a bit repressed.

Leno: Yeah. A little strict?

Tori: Yeah. Um, a bit strict and you know, to move my hips, I kind of had to wiffle on the piano stool that was the only thing that was okay to do.

Leno: Yeah, now did your father ever day, we enjoy the concert, can't you sit still, do you have to wiggle around?

Tori: Um, he doesn't touch that subject.

Leno: No, no, just--

Tori: He let's me do my thing.

Leno: Yeah.

Tori: When I'm at the piano.

Leno: Well, that's the best way. Just away from the piano.

Tori: Well, I'm older now, but when I was growing up, you know, it was a bit, it was disciplined.

Leno: Yeah.

Tori: But it's good because you know I had things to write about if he would have been a dentist, I don't know what I would have written about.

Leno: That's true. There, you see. Things work out for the best. Hello sir (points at her pants) these are coming back, but maybe they never left. These are like, I'm back. I'm back in college, I'm in Boston, I'm in Commonwealth Avenue again. Look, bell-bottoms. Yeah, that whole look is coming back, isn't it?

Tori: Yeah, I guess, you know, it's good because I can wear any kind of shoes. I don't have any problem. [transcribed by Kristen Loftis]
