Q (UK)
January 1996

"But what rhymes with 'boob tube'?"

asks a noticably-tattoed Tori Amos, adding the proverbial touches to the lyrics for her new album in New Orleans. Titled Boys For Pele (after the goddess of volcanoes rather than soccer hero Edson Arantes Do Nascimento), its recording was split between Louisiana and rural Ireland, where the ever-quixotic Tori insisted on being recorded in a box, specially constructed in a local church. Much ecclesiastical grumbling ensued (along "too big for confession" lines, one assumes), whereupon she guaranteed to dismantle and reassemble the wooden installation as the local parishioners demanded.
