Swim to New York State

Lyrics by Tori Amos

I'd swim to New York State
From the Cornish coast of England
For even just a day
We'll meet at that cafe

You'll say it hurt too much to stay
And so you left the Cornish coast of England
And a love who was not ready for this
To dive with you to where the sea-maids live

I'll say that is when I (I had to face)
Life just wasn't the same (and how you gave and you gave)

I'll ask, will you come back?
To the Cornish coast of England
There's a rock pool we can dive in
And that now I understand

You gave everything (you gave the love)
You made the difference you gave (you gave the love)
You gave everything (you gave the love)
While I was looking away (you gave and you gave)
(And you gave and you gave)
(And you gave and you gave)

Selfless without blame
Your triumph abandoned in the rain
And you gave and you gave
And you gave and you gave
And you gave and then still you gave

I'd swim from New York State
To the Cornish coast of England
I found a cave we can dive in
If only for the day
If only for the day

Tori Quotes

["Swim to New York State"] can be about whatever you want it to be. I wrote it as a love story. It's about a guy who left Cornwall and went to New York because his heart was broken. The female character I'm singing was busy with her life, having success, working on her career. Finally, she was able to value what he gave her when they were together. But then she faces the question: is it too late? [Scene - November 2, 2021]
