Spies

Lyrics by Tori Amos

Knowing this may help you make
Make it through the night (on lullabies)
Knowing this may help you to
Open up your eyes

Spies
(Spy)

Everywhere from here to London Town
Tracking the thieving meanies
Below and above ground

Spies
That's right
Spies

You see an aardvark on the underground
Then on the bridge, under the tower
In spatterdashes with a plaid umbrella
It's seems, he's just a well dressed fella

Spies
That's right
Spies

Knowing this may help you make
Make it through the night (on lullabies)
Knowing this may help you to
Open up your eyes

Spies (spy)
That's right
That's right
Spies

In a café stalking scary men
Spotting a flying saucer
hovering above Big Ben

Spies
That's right
Spies

They may say they're on holiday
Grabbing a latte in a coquelicot beret

Spies
Je suis
Spy

But that hippopotamus
Must stay anonymous for now
Yes, that hippopotamus
Must stay anonymous for now

Here from London up to Aberdeen
Ferry to Dublin
All the way down to Skibbereen

Spies
That's right
Spies
Spies don't think that it's absurd
(No spy that I know does not)
Scary men dipped in mustard
(English mixed with Dijon)
Mrs. Crabby Apple won't get custard
Won't get crumble

Spies
We love
Spies

Knowing this may help you make
Make it through the night (on lullabies)
Knowing this may help you to
Open up your eyes (with lullabies)
Knowing this may help you to
Help you close your eyes (get some shut eye)

Tori Quotes

That's me coming out of a really dark place and being able to deal with bad dreams, knowing that they're benevolent. [I'm exploring the idea that] from Cornwall to London, up to Aberdeen and over to Dublin, on these isles there are well intentioned beings who are trying to help and protect people who can't sleep because of their night terrors. There was about a week when Tash was having all these really bad dreams, and so I was inspired to write something that would make her laugh. [NME - September 20, 2021]

It was strangely hot in England in July, and my daughter was texting me that bats were chasing her. She would not go in her room. The bats come in, and I needed to write her a lullaby, but the ones that work at 6 [years old] weren't working for a 21-year-old. I needed to come up with something different, and I came up with "Spies" to get her into a different headspace. [Scene - May 5, 2022]
