Ocean to Ocean

Lyrics by Tori Amos

Ocean to ocean, tales of the sea
Tales deeply troubling
Stay with me until we
Unravel this fishing net

Ocean to ocean, queen of the sea
Warning of these needless killings
Stay with me until we
Unravel this fishing net

There are those who don't give a goddamn
That we're near mass extinction
There are those who never give a goddamn
For anything that they are breaking
There are those who only give a goddamn
For the profit that they're making

Ocean to ocean, where have I been?
While all of this has been escalating

There is a way out of this
There is a way out of this

There are those who don't give a goddamn
That we're near mass extinction
There are those who never give a goddamn
For anything that they are breaking
There are those who only give a goddamn
For the profit that they're making

Stay with me until we
Unravel this fishing net
Stay with me, stay with me

Faith, where have you gone?
Gone nature's sons
Faith, will you return?
Return nature's sons

To ocean to ocean
To ocean to ocean
To ocean to ocean

Tori Quotes

Police were stopping people coming into Cornwal at a certain point. If you understand, that's how they felt they needed to tackle the health crisis and the variant that was exploding. ... Tash had me... not trapped, but she'd rub her hands together and say, "You're watching this today." She would bring me documentaries, things that I didn't realize were happening, I didn't realize about what was happening on the level to the ocean that is happening. It [Seaspiracy] opened my eyes in ways that - I have to tell you - it made me flee to the piano and start writing "Ocean to Ocean," the song itself. [Spin - October 25, 2021]

I feel closer to the worship and the desire to preserve our sacred Mother Earth. When I was growing up, at a church, there was this idea that Man somehow had power over Nature. I have come to see that this is absolutely not the case. The song "Ocean to Ocean" deals directly with this theme. Some people don't care about the effects of their business on the planet. They only care about profit. I think that until we see the Earth as a living being, as our Mother, things will be difficult. It seems to me that the younger generation understands this. My daughter Tash showed me a documentary that made me realise how much damage has been done to the oceans. Afterwards, I started playing on the piano and the song "Ocean to Ocean" came out. [Rolling Stone - November 11, 2021]

"Ocean to Ocean" is really about um, it's multi-layered. It's a love letter to the Cornish coast and the Atlantic Ocean that really helped me through the third lockdown here, which was quite severe last year in the UK. And nature really showed me how to regenerate and transform and she wasn't locked down. At the same time, my daughter Tash showed me some documentaries about what humans are doing to our oceans. And so it was really a wake-up call for me to understand how serious it is and how we need to protect our wonderful oceans. [NPR Tiny Desk Concert - February 2, 2022]
