“I am so honored to be receiving the Peabody Medal. When I look back to my time at Johns Hopkins and then to where I am now, and to be receiving this prestigious award, it is truly overwhelming. The 5-year-old inside of me is skipping with joy and gratitude.”

Tori Amos releases her second book, Resistance: A Songwriter’s Story of Hope, Change, and Courage.

“When you write songs, you’re dealing with story and with emotion. But you’re also dealing with power. Stories can change the way people see the world. They can reveal systems that people might not notice otherwise. With Resistance I wanted to look at the ways those systems work, and how artists, writers, and thinkers can push back when those systems begin to silence voices or distort the truth.”

[Publishers Weekly, April 2020]

“What I’ve learned over the years is that resistance is not just about opposing something. It’s about protecting what matters. It’s about standing up for people who cannot stand up for themselves, and about making sure that the stories that need to be told are not silenced. Artists have always played a role in that. Our job is to listen, to translate what we hear, and to try to illuminate what is happening beneath the surface.”

[Associated Press, May 2020]

“This book is about how we can transform our anger into something that can actually help create change. Anger is not the enemy. But anger that is not guided by wisdom can become destructive. We have to learn how to harness it, how to direct it so that it becomes a force for transformation rather than something that tears us apart.”

[NPR, May 4, 2020]

“Resistance is also very personal. It’s about the moments when you have to decide whether you’re going to remain silent or whether you’re going to speak up. Sometimes speaking up comes with consequences. But if you stay silent, you can lose something inside yourself. Over time you realize that your voice matters, and that using it is part of your responsibility as a human being.”

Tori’s sixteenth album, Ocean to Ocean, is released by Decca Records / Mercury Classics. Written and recorded at Martian Engineering in Cornwall, England, the album is produced by Tori Amos with Mark Hawley and Marcel van Limbeek. Much of the record is written during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns and reflects Amos’s attempt to process grief following the death of her mother in 2019. The album debuts at number 6 on a href="https://www.billboard.com/music/music-news/tori-amos-top-album-sales-chart-9656765/">Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart, making it her tenth album to debut in the Top 10. It sells 9,000 copies in the United States during its first week.

Ocean to Ocean is about your losses and how you deal with them. It’s about the moment when you’re knocked down and you’re asking yourself whether you can get back up again.”

[Associated Press, October 2021]

“I was in Cornwall and watching what was happening in the world. The songs came from observing what people were going through and also from my own experience of grief. Music has always been the place where I try to make sense of things.”
